INGREDIENTS

1 pound frozen bread dough, thawed
4 ounces sweet italian sausage
1/4 cup chopped onion
2 cloves of minced garlic
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 cup italian style tomato sauce
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk

  1. Divide the bread dough into 8  portions.  Heat a large skillet over a medium head and add sausage.  Cook until brown and crumbly, drain fat.  Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.  Grease a baking sheet.
  2. Stir onion, garlic, basil, oregano and tomato sauce into the skillet and simmer for 10 minutes.  Roll each dough piece into a 5 inch circle.  Spoon the sausage mixture into each circle and sprinkle with cheese.
  3. Moisten the edges of the dough with water.  Fold dough over to enclose the filling and press to seal.  Place each calzone on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Beat the egg with milk and brush over the calzones.  Bake for about 15 minutes or until golden brown and serve.

VARIATION

You can use any filling you like, be imaginative.  You can even use leftovers such
as chicken, ham and cheese.  The possibilities are endless.

EXPRESS COOKING

For a quick and easy tomato sauce dip you can use any leftover spaghetti sauce.  Also the tines of a fort are the best tool for sealing the bread dough to prevent the filling from leaking out.

MONEY SAVING TIP

You can buy a family pack of italian sausage, use the correct amount for the calzones and then freeze the remainder to add to your favorite spaghetti or lasagna recipe.
