Ham Steak, Apricots, Brown Sugar, Ground Cloves

INGREDIENTS

1 ham steak (1 inch thick)
1 cup brown sugar
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1 can apricot halves in syrup (16 ounce size)

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Trim the fat from the outer edge of the ham steak.  Cut out and discard center bone.
  2. Place the ham in a medium baking dish and spoon the brown sugar over the top.  Sprinkle with cloves.
  3. Drain the apricots reserving 1/4 cup of the syrup.  Arrange the apricot halves (cut side up) in a circle over the ham.
  4. Pour reserved syrup over the ham and bake until the sauce is bubbly (about 20 minutes).

VARIATION

Removing the cloves from the brown sugar will give you a less pungent and milder flavor.

EXPRESS COOKING

Cut slashes at 1 inch intervals on the fatty outside edge of the ham to keep it from curling while cooking.

MONEY SAVING TIPS

The brown sugar and apricot mixture in this recipe will cover twice as much ham.  Save time and money by doubling the amount of the ham used in this recipe and use the leftovers to make ham biscuits.
