Cheddar Cheese, Macaroni, Butter, Egg, Salt, Pepper, Milk, Bread Crumbs

INGREDIENTS

1 package elbow macaroni (8 ounce size)
1 tablespoon butter
1 egg, beaten
3 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
salt and pepper
1 1/2 cups milk
1/4 cup day old bread crumbs

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Cook the macaroni  according to package instructions.  Drain well and return to pan.  Add butter and toss gently with a fork until the butter melts.  Cool slightly.
  2. Add egg and 2 1/2 cups cheddar cheese to the pasta.  Stir gently until well mixed and salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Pour the mixture into a greased shallow 2 1/2 quarter baking dish.  Pour enough milk to cover the macaroni in the baking dish and bake for 20 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle the bread crumbs and the remaining cheddar cheese on the top and bake for 10 minutes or longer until set and golden brown.

VARIATION

To turn this casserole into a main dish, add 2 cups of cubed ham when mixing in the egg and cheddar cheese.

EXPRESS COOKING

When draining the macaroni, try warming the colander.  A cold colander can cause the pasta to stick together.

Be sure not to overcook the macaroni.  Overcooking will cause it to be soggy as well as decrease the nutritional value.

MONEY SAVING TIPS

You can save time and money by using packaged croutons in place of bread crumbs and process them in a blender or food processor.
